There are a variety of different yoga styles out there with each catering to different physiological and emotional needs. To find the right type of yoga, you should start by asking yourself some very basic questions. What is that I’m seeking for? Relaxation, strength, flexibility and/or spiritual growth.

  1. Start by defining your goals
The first step is to identify – what do I hope to achieve? – Reduce my stress, improve my flexibility, build my strength, or deepen my spiritual practice? Restorative or Yin Yoga, can be used for relaxation and reliving stress as it focuses on slow- paced meditative stretches. For strength and endurance building,  Power Yoga or Ashtanga might be a better fit.
  2. Understand your fitness Level
Considering your fitness level is very crucial when it comes to choosing a yoga style. Some yoga styles can be more physically demanding than others. If you are beginner, Hatha Yoga could be a great starting point, as it focuses on teaching the foundations of yoga and  helps create an awareness about your breath and body. If you consider yourself very fit, you might enjoy the dynamic flow of Vinyasa or the challenging poses in Hot Yoga.
  3. Consider your Schedule
If you have a busy lifestyle, you could opt for quick 20 minute morning yoga routine. Look out for short, high-intensity practices like Power Yoga which could fit well in your busy schedule. If you have more time and are seeking for a deeper experience, Kundalini or restorative yoga might be a good option for you.
  4. What is your Personality
Do you enjoy the calmness and like the mediative atmosphere? If so, Yin Yoga or Kundalini Yoga may resonate with you. If you are very active and movement, a fast-paced Vinyasa or Hot Yoga class could be more appealing.
  5. Try experimenting with different styles
You should always explore all the options out there and see which one works best for you. Many yoga places run introductory offers, where they let you try different classes, before committing to one. You can also find a lot of yoga tutorials online and can try experimenting from the comfort of your own home.
  6. Find the right teacher
It’s best to start your yoga journey under the guidance of an experienced instructor. Finding the right yoga instructor is very crucial. Once they are aware of your goals and preferences, they can recommend styles that align with your needs.
  7. Always listen to Your Body
In the end, it all comes down to how you feel during and after the yoga practice. Your body is best judge and will indicate if the style you have chosen is best for you. You will be soar in the beginning but your body will guide you, when it will come to identifying the good pains or the bad pains.

Finding the right type of yoga is a personal journey. What works for me, might not work for you or vice versa. The best approach is to keep exploring different styles until you discover the one that resonates with you. Remember, yoga is about creating harmony between the mind, body, and spirit—so trust your instincts and enjoy the process.
